What are the reasons why some crucibles have cracked during heating and handling?

When we did this experiment in Chem it was because we didn't continulously move the bunsen burner around to keep the heat distributed evenly...and there was possibly a crack in the crucible before you started, so the heat caused it to expand. The concentration of the heat in one spot...wham. Bye Bye Crucible.
