Can a lightning strike do no more damage than an interior wall crack?

A contractor told my friend (who owns a vacant home) that he believes lightning hit his chimney and caused cracking in an interior wall located bellow the chimney. The chimney is made out of sandstone, and there were a couple of small slices in the driveway. Another friend is sure the contractor is lying to my friend, but i don't think it's too far fetched. Ever hear of anything like this?
