God? christianity? really?

i wasn't raised with religion. so i was wondering if someone can tell me why so many people believe in god??? it sounds crazy to me. i was just judged by a Christian women really harshly just because i don't except jesus as my "lord and savior" are all these people just mentally handicapped or something?
