HELP !!!! I have this stupid transcontinental railroad project?

I need to have a list of the landscape, animals, towns,cities, and human endeavors that travelers in the 1870's would be excited to see, and i need to know how long the journey that the railroad covers would have taken without the railroad. Please help!
